They told stories of course, about their neighbours and about the Laird and Minister and smugglers and lovers - the vivid people who were part of their own circumstances.

John BrooksOrkney Peatfire Tales are run by Lynn Barbour and John Brooks.

John, a lifelong walking, and bird watcher is well qualified to help you discover and explore the island coastal walks, seascapes and birdlife.

John is a Bsc (hons) Graduate in Humanities and is an enthusiast in nature and Orkney folklore. He is also a qualified yellow badge Scottish Tour Guide and, as well as Orkney Peatfire Tales, also offers Stromness Heritage Walks - guided town walks of 16th century Stromness.

Lynn is an MA Arts Graduate in Drama and English. For many years Lynn researched and dramatised the folklore and legends of the Orkney islands while teaching and choreographing classic ballet, traditional Scottish dance, and contemporary dance and drama.

Lynn BarbourThereafter she developed highly successful programmes of communication arts, directing summer schools and staff development courses throughout the UK and Europe. For five years, Lynn also ran the Orcadia Creative Learning Centre in Edinburgh, the only one of its kind in the UK.

From John and Lynn's passion for the folklore and environment of the Orkney Islands emerged the Orkney Peatfire Tales at Via House in 2004. This proved to be so popular, Lynn and John decided to create Tales and Ales Evenings at the Stromness Hotel.
